Prayer is such a human activity. Submission on our own accord. We often submit to find peace, comfort, or meaning. In this piece, Ostensibly Faith I explore the ways we submit to capital, industry, and corporate systems, often because we feel small and expendable in the face of their mass.
I use the contrast between my stark, vulnerable, unclothed body and the huge dock crane in the background to illustrate this feeling. I kneel and pray, not to a god, but to industry, to our economic systems, to the constant movement of imports and exports that we have become so used to in modern life. Each photo holding a different pose, what connects them is my strained and overly contorted body. This is purposeful and is meant to feel off-putting. We often distance ourselves from capital and perverse economic systems, yet still become subservient to them. I wanted to create a piece that explores how we are diminished by capitalism, particularly in its advanced state, and how readily we accept that feeling or even seek it out.
